3. How SPM merit is calculated
The official 2026 SPM calculator first asks you to select the correct stream: STEM A, STEM B, STEM C or KSI. It then calculates grade points from selected subjects.

Assume the official subject selection for a student produces a combined subject total of 68 out of 80, and the student has a co-curricular mark of 8.00.
This simplified example demonstrates the formula. The official calculator should be used to decide which subjects belong in each component for the student’s stream.
6. STPM, Matriculation and Foundation merit
For the main STPM, Matriculation and Foundation routes described in the official 2026/2027 circular, the academic component is based on CGPA and contributes up to 90%. The relevant official co-curricular mark contributes up to 10%.
Worked example: A CGPA of 3.50 produces an academic mark of 78.75. With a co-curricular mark of 9.00, total merit is 87.75%.

7. Diploma merit is different
The official UPU STPM/equivalent calculator shows diploma/equivalent merit as 100% academic, without a separate co-curricular addition.
Worked example: A diploma CGPA of 3.50 gives an estimated merit of 87.50%.
A strong diploma CGPA does not make every bachelor’s programme available. The diploma field, accreditation or recognition, subject grades, experience and faculty conditions may also be assessed.
8. How STAM merit is handled
The official calculator converts the STAM achievement level into a CGPA-equivalent value for the academic component. It then applies the 90% academic calculation and adds the official co-curricular mark.
Use the official dropdown rather than converting a STAM result yourself, because the calculator applies the approved achievement mapping.
9. Where co-curricular marks come from
Applicants do not normally invent or self-score the co-curricular component. The 2026 briefing identifies the responsible source according to the study route:
- SPM, STPM and STAM: the relevant Ministry of Education co-curricular records.
- Matriculation/Foundation: records supplied by the relevant Matriculation division, foundation centre or participating institution.
- Diploma/equivalent: the published method uses 100% academic merit.
If the mark displayed in your application appears wrong, follow the correction process announced for your category instead of estimating a replacement.
10. What an e-Panduan merit figure means
Programme listings may show an average merit figure. Treat it as a planning reference, not a fixed entry requirement or guaranteed cutoff.
Your selection outcome also depends on:
- meeting the general admission requirements;
- meeting every programme-specific requirement;
- passing interviews or tests where required;
- the number and strength of applicants;
- available places; and
- the priority order of your programme choices.
The official e-Panduan warns that merit alone does not guarantee an offer.

- Calculate using the official tool. Save a screenshot for your planning records.
- Confirm your category. A correct score under the wrong category is not useful.
- Check special requirements first. Remove any course for which you lack a compulsory subject or grade.
- Compare programme information. Use merit as one indicator of competitiveness.
- Create a balanced shortlist. Mix aspirational and realistic eligible choices.
- Rank by genuine preference. Choice priority is part of the selection process.
